My name is Joy McCarthy, I’m a holistic nutritionist (RNCP CNP), two-time bestselling cookbook author and most importantly, I’m a mom! I live in Toronto with my family and my hubs Walker is both my business partner and the funniest guy I know — which makes working together that much better. I love creating new recipes and sharing healthy living inspo with my joyous community. I love what I do!

I’m excited about being part of the Yoso community because they care about providing high quality whole food products to consumers — I appreciate that. And, they have the BEST tasting coconut yogurt in town.

We asked a few questions about her dairy-free lifestyle as part of this series, Living Dairy Free:

Why are you dairy-free?

Years ago I discovered that when I cut out my full-fat dairy milk cappuccino my inflammation in my joints and the puffiness in my face completely vanished. I was convinced that dairy was not great for me. Even though I’m not 100% dairy-free, I still consume some cheese and sheep or goat yogurt on occasion, I definitely feel my best when I’m dairy-free.

Favourite dairy-free products?

I love coconut milk in my smoothies and Yoso plain coconut yogurt with just about anything. If I want a creamier smoothie I will add it to that and I often use it in place of ice-cream with apple crisp or any healthy dessert. My toddler LOVES coconut yogurt, it’s her favourite snack with some fresh fruit before bed sprinkled with some hemp hearts, cinnamon and a drizzle of raw honey.

Favourite local spot to eat that accommodates dairy-free?

Living in a big city like Toronto makes it easy to eat out and enjoy dairy-free. For casual fare, I like going to Impact Kitchen for breakfast and Simple Kitchen for a lunch date with my daughter. For date night and special occasions, my hubs and I LOVE going to Buca Yorkville — although not a dairy-free restaurant, it’s certainly easy to enjoy amazing food without eating dairy.

Favourite place to shop for groceries?

I do most of my grocery shopping at The Sweet Potato in the Junction. And in the warmer months I go to the farmer’s market in my neighbourhood every Monday afternoon after I pick up my daughter from daycare.
