Hi! I’m Daedra Surowiec and I’m the artist and owner at Strawesome.com  I spend my creative time making fun, eco-friendly glass straws that not only help put an end to single use plastics but they are also unique works of art.  I’ve combined my design experience with my passion for the environment to create a product you are going to enjoy for a lifetime!

We asked a few questions about her dairy-free lifestyle as part of this series, Living Dairy Free:

Why are you dairy-free?

Yes, for the most part.  We definitely do not drink cow’s milk, I wasn’t raised on it and was taught at a young age that milk from a cow is meant for a baby cow which is a huge mammal, which as humans we are not. Plus, it really grosses me out.  I don’t purchase conventional dairy products to eat at home.  If I have a dairy cheese while I’m away from home it will be a small amount of a very high end cheese.  We aren’t vegan in our household so the avoidance of dairy is simply just an educated choice.

Favourite dairy-free products?

Homemade almond milk (or, if we’re traveling we use Califia Farms brand), and if I need a cheese-like substitute I will use nutritional yeast- my favorite since I was a child is to use this on fresh homemade popcorn to create cheese corn!

Favourite local spot to eat that accommodates dairy-free?

We live in the outskirts of Metro-Detroit, Michigan.  We have two favorite spots that have wonderful dairy free menus.  The first is called The Fuel in Brighton, MI and the other is called Vibe Well in Fenton, MI.

Favourite place to shop for groceries?

During the short growing season in Michigan I love to shop for produce at our local Farmers Markets, there’s nothing that can compare to truly fresh produce! I stock up so much each week that I likely look like a crazy person.  During the off-season I love to shop for food items at our local co-op called Livingston Organics in Brighton, MI.

Enjoy sipping a Yoso smoothie with a Strawesome glass straw!
